The Hacker

The hacker is a person who loves and knows what he does and wants to keep learning about it. Some examples of hacker, that have nothing to do with a criminal, are showed below:

  • A hacker can be either a programmer hacker or carpenter hacker.
  • Da Vinci was both an engineering hacker and an art hacker.
  • Picasso was a paint hacker.

In the first congress of hackers, which took place in San Francisco in 1984, Burell Smith (Macintosh creator) said: "Hackers can do almost anything and be a hacker. You can be a hacker carpenter. It's not necessarily high tech. I think it has to do with craftsmanship and caring about what you're doing".

Hacker’s main motivations are:

  • The world is full of fascinating problems waiting to be solved.
  • No problem should ever has to be solved twice... once solved, the solution should be accessible for the people interested in it, share.
  • Create free software is a moral duty, so that other people can admire the beauty of your code and help each other to develop it.

This motivations are supported on mutual values that shapes the Hacker Ethic: Passion, freedom, social consciousness, truth, anti-corruption, social equality, accessibility, curiosity, creativity, interest...

Hacker Ethic vs Work Ethic

The hacker ethic leads to a major change with our parent’s work ethic. They use their work as a mean to get his family ahead, to feed them, maintain them and guarantee them a future. The hackers see their work as a goal itself, something that deserve to be studied for its own beauty, no matter the money you earn, putting the passion for what they are doing ahead of guaranteeing their future.

¿Why being a hacker is frowned upon?

Some people mix up being a hacker with being a cracker. Currently, this is the meaning collected by the RAE. There are "good" hackers that are devoted to learn anything to create and fix things, they look for security flaws and report this flaws for the community’s good. There are "bad" hackers that take advantage of these flaws for their own good. These are the crackers. (Black Hats).
